An active implant means the working part, a vibrating transducer, is surgically placed under the skin, attached to the skull. A sound processor is worn on the outside of the head, behind the ear, held in place by a magnet.

MED-EL Bonebridge

The implant consists of a coil to receive a magnet, an electronic package and a small vibrator. These are implanted under the skin. Externally, a sound processor is placed on the skin using a magnet to hold it in place. This has two microphones to pick up sound, and a replaceable battery.

The Bonebridge is suitable for patients with a mild hearing loss and can be used for patients from 5 years of age.

MED-EL Vibrant Soundbridge

The implant consists of a coil to receive a magnet, a small electronics package and a tiny vibrating transducer which the surgeon connects to a bone in the middle ear. All of these parts are under the skin.

The Soundbridge can be used for patients with a mild to moderate hearing loss, and is suitable for patients aged 5 years and above.

Both the Bonebridge and Vibrant Soundbridge require an accessory called the Samba 2 Go in order to stream from either iPhone or android to the Samba 2 processor.

Oticon Medical have recently released the Sentio Ti Implant which is an active implant surgically placed under the skin. The Sentio 1 Mini is the sound processor which is held over the implant by magnets.

The Sentio 1 Mini can stream directly to iPhones, and requires a small ConnectClip accessory to stream to android.
